PM takes responsibility in CVC appointment fiasco

Manmohan Singh
New Delhi, Mar 4: Cornered and with his integrity being questioned, Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh has accepted responsibility for the appointment of P J Thomas as Central Vigilance Commissioner and said that there was no coalition compulsion in the case.

Dr Singh also said that he respected the Supreme Court of India's verdict that calls the appointment of Thomas as CVC as illegal.

Earlier, a three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice of India S H Kapadia, ruled the appointment of P J Thomas as CVC by a high-powered committee headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, as illegal. The bench noted that the decision to appoint Thomas as CVC despite a corruption case pending against him in Kerala, was arbitrary and illegal.

The CVC is meant to look after CBI probes and corruption allegations against bureaucrats.

Thomas, has become the first CVC to be removed from office for being under-trial in allegations of corruption.
