Rizwanur committed suicide, SC concludes

New Delhi, Mar 1: It's more than three years that a young graphic designer Rizwanur Rahman found dead on a railway track in Kolkata. Citing his tragedy, the entire city moved with a silent protest. Accusations, charges were raised. Many say it was a murder case while other opine that it was a clear case of suicide. But now, the Supreme Court on Tuesday, Mar 1, delivered its verdict which concluded that Rizwanur indeed committed suicide.

Rejecting Calcutte High Court's order to initiate a new probe in Rizwanur's "murder case", the Supreme Court ordered the investigative agency CBI to carry on its investigation in the case as an abetment to suicide only. The High Court had affirmed that CBI's investigation was inadequate and asked the agency to start a fresh investigation in the case.

The Supreme Court today addressed the petition filed by the main accused in the case, Ashok Todi and his family challenging Calcutta High Court's previous order. CBI earlier had dismissed Rizwanur's case as a suicide case and chargesheeted seven people including Mr Todi accusing them of 'abetment to suicide'.

Kolkata police also concluded that it was a suicide case, however, Rizwanur's family and friends are not convinced with the suicide theory. They persuaded the investigative agencies to probe in the case as a murder case.

Rizwanur was found dead after one month of his marriage with Kolkata's industrialist Ashok Todi's daughter Priyanka Todi. Rizwanur and Priyanka married without Todi family's consent.

The main accused are - Ashok Todi is the owner of the Rs 200-crore Lux Cozi hosiery brand, his brother Pradip and brother in-law Anil Sarogi and a senior IPS officers then serving in the Kolkata Police.

Todi had filed the new petition in the Supreme Court pleading that they will face the trial on the basis of findings of CBI and there was no need to conduct a fresh investigation in the three-and-half-year-old murder case.
