Indian Embassy in US opens Facebook page

Washington, Feb 28: We heard a lot about the popularity and penetration of social networking websites like Facebook, Twitter and Orkut among others. During the democratic protests in the Middle East and African countries, we experienced the power of these platforms to overthrew the dictators and corrupt governments. More over, these websites help us to stay connected despite of all barriers like region, colour, religion, language etc.

Fascinated by the huge popularity of Facebook among Indians and citizens reside in foreign nations, Indian Embassy in the United States announced the launch of its Facebook account. Indian Embassy aims to reach out to the Indian-American community.

The new move came as a part of the efforts of Meera Shankar, Indian Ambassador to United States, to reach out to highly populated Indians, who reside in various parts of the United States.

"We are happy to announce the launch of the Facebook account of the Embassy. Please join the group and also invite other 'friends of India' to join," Embassy spokesman Virander Paul said in a statement.

Indian Embassy posted messages like, "The Washington Post report on maximum INDIA", "Kennedy Center's India Festival puts on a Maximum display", Keynote Address by Ambassador Meera Shankar at Emory University"s Emerging India Summit on February 24, 2011 - "Why India Matters".
