TDP bats for appointment of assembly standing committee

Hyderabad, Feb 25 (PTI) TDP today suggested appointing anassembly standing committee, an economic advisory councilamong other measures to ensure better financial management andgood legislative practices.

Speaking on the Budget for 2011-12, Leader of Oppositionin the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Council Dadi Veerabhadra Raosaid the Parliamentary Standing Committees are functioningwell and the model should be replicated.

Noting that the system of Standing Committees is asuccess in the Lok Sabha, he said Prime Minister ManmohanSingh has also favoured constituting such committees in thestate.

Responding to the idea, Council Chairman A Chakrapanisaid the suggestion to appoint standing committees was made ata national conference of Speakers and Chief Minister N KiranKumar Reddy, who was Assembly Speaker then, had welcomed thesuggestion.

The Opposition Leader said the Chief Minister can have anEconomic Advisory Council on the lines of the Prime Minister''sEconomic Advisory Council to provide expert and diverseopinion on economic issues to the government.

He said the government can take into consideration theHuman Development Index (HDI) which is people-centric.

Several European countries like France are layingincreased emphasis on Human Development Index, Rao said.
