Delhi govt mulls mechanism for environmental auditing

New Delhi, Feb 22(PTI) Delhi government is consideringthe setting up of a mechanism under which environmentalauditing of various agencies, departments, RWAs, schools andcolleges will be carried out on a regular basis to measure thegreenhouse gas emission by them.

The idea has been mooted by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshitduring a conference on climate change and officials said sucha mechanism would encourage competition among variousgovernment departments to go for cutting their emissions whilecarrying out various activities.

"The environmental auditing will encourage a healthycompetition among various government departments, schools,colleges and Resident Welfare Associations to reduce theircarbon footprints," said a senior official.

He said government may institute awards for bestperforming departments as well as schools and colleges.

Dikshit put forward the idea during the valedictorysession of the New Delhi conference on cities and climatechange organised by Delhi government.

The two-day conference was organised by Delhi governmentto seek opinion of global experts in formulating a long-termplan in making the national capital a carbon-neutral city in a20-year time period.
