SC reserves order on reinvestigation in Rizwanur murder case

New Delhi, Feb 22 (PTI) The Supreme Court today reservedits verdict on appeals challenging the Calcutta High Court''sorder for a fresh CBI into the death of computer graphicsteacher Rizwanur Rahman, who had married the daughter ofindustrialist Ashok Todi, after registering a murder case.

A bench comprising justices P Sathasivam and B S Chauhanconcluded the hearing on cross appeals filed by Ashok Todi,whose daughter Priyanka had married Rizwanur, mother of thedeceased Kishwar Jahan and CBI challenging the May 18 order ofthe High Court.

Rizwanur was found dead near railway tracks in Dumdumarea of Kolkata on September 21, 2007, just a month after hismarriage on August 18, 2007, to Priyanka.

Ashok Todi, owner of the Rs. 200-crore Lux Cozi hosierybrand, his brother Pradip and brother in-law Anil Sarogi areaccused in the case along with senior IPS officers thenserving in the Kolkata Police.

Challenging the High Court order, Solicitor GeneralGopal Subramanium, appearing for CBI, submitted a fresh probewas not required in the case as the agency had earlierconducted the detailed probe and arrived at the conclusionthat an offence was made out for abatement of suicide againstAshok Todi and his relatives.

Todi pleaded he was ready to face the trial on the basisof findings of CBI and there was no need to conduct a freshinvestigation in the three-and-half-year-old murder case.

A division bench of the High Court had ordered freshinvestigation after setting aside the CBI investigationearlier ordered by a single bench and directed the agency tocomplete the probe within four months.
