Godhra riot verdict delivered - 31 convicted

Godhra, Feb 22: A special court today (Tuesday, Feb 22) delivered the long awaited judgment on the Godhra riot case that was pending since the last nine years. Thirty one people have been convicted as guilty for criminal conspiracy and 63 others have been acquitted in the case.

The court also claimed that the Godhra riot was a conspiracy and was not an accident.

The main accused Maulana Umarji has been acquitted of charges of criminal conspiracy.

Finally, the truth has been unraveled on what transpired on Feb 27, 2002 when 59 persons, mainly kar sewaks, were burnt to death after a mob set fire to the S-6 coach of the Sabarmati Express near Godhra railway station.

Previously, 134 people had been named as accused, of which 16 are absconding, 13 were released for the lack of evidence, 15 are out on bail and 80 of the accused still in jail.
