Fake census officer robs gold, Rs 1 lakh cash

Salem, Feb 21 (PTI) A woman posing as a census officerallegedly assaulted and robbed a 35-year-old woman of 16sovereign of gold ornaments and Rs 1 lakh in cash today,police said.

Maheswari was assaulted in Annathapatti area in thedistrict when she went to fetch a glass of water for the womanposing as the census officer, police said.

Meanwhile in nearby Namakkal district, a woman censusofficer suspected to be a robber was allegedly locked up todayin an iron merchant''s shop before being rescued by the police,authorities said.

The officer was carrying out the census in the shop inPallipalayam area in the district when the iron merchant grewsuspicious of her questioning and locked her up, police said.
