UK court sentences Indian restaurants' owner for employing illegal immigrants

London, Feb 20 (ANI): A Carlisle Crown Court Judge has sentenced the owner of three Indian restaurants to two years in jail for exploiting illegal immigrants for cash.

Mohammed Rahman was caught employing 35 illegal immigrants, mostly from Pakistan, in his restaurant by giving them free food and lodging in "basic and cramped conditions" in return for work, the Daily Star reports.

UK Border Agency officers had caught the immigrants working as waiters and chefs at his three restaurants in Keswick, Sedbergh and Grange in the Lake District. Despite being given three warnings, he continued employing the failed asylum seekers in his restaurants.

Rahman, however, said that it was his "duty" to provide shelter to fellow Muslims.

Rejecting Rahman's arguments, Judge Peter Hughes said: "We are all subject to the laws of the land, whatever our faith or background." (ANI)
