Fertilizer for NE reaches Bangladesh, Myanmar

Shillong, Feb 20 (PTI) A good chunk of the over threelakh tonne of subsidized fertilizer supplied to the North Eastin a season reaches neighbouring countries like Bangladesh andMyanmar illegally on a regular basis.

Citing reports of Central intelligence agencies,Director of Movement in the Ministry of Fertilizer, DeepakKumar said this at a zonal meeting with government officialsof the eight North Eastern states here.

Kumar asked the state governments to check smugglingof fertilizer across the border.

During the meeting yesterday, he assured the states offull cooperation from the ministry to get fertilizer subsidiesand asked the states to form vigilance committees to checksmuggling and illegal sale of subsidized fertilizer.

Kumar said the ministry of agriculture was impressedby the overall agricultural scenario in the North East regionas the agricultural production in the region has grown overthe last few years.
