BJP to hold protests against change in UP local body act
Lucknow, Feb 19 (PTI) BJP''s unit in Uttar Pradeshtoday announced to stage demonstrations on February 21 againstthe Mayawati government''s move to amend the Local Bodies Actfor indirect election of mayors and chairmen.
"The bill introduced by the government in the Assemblyis an attempt to grab posts of mayors and chairmen in urbanlocal bodies and the party has decided to organisedemonstrations against this on February 21," BJP spokesmanSatyadeo Singh told reporters here.
He alleged that the amendment would lead to dominanceof muscle and money power and encourage horse trading.
The decision was taken during a meeting of the partyleaders and office-bearers held today, Singh said.
"Discussions were also held on the party''s two-daystate executive meeting to be held in Moradabad from February26," he said.
The BJP spokesman said two resolutions would be passedduring the executive meeting.
"The party has also decided to organise functions inevery village to celebrate its foundation day on April 6,"Singh said.
