New Delhi, Feb 18 (PTI) The Centre today told the SupremeCourt that it was in consultation with state governments toresolve the differences for holding a singleeligibility-cum-entrance examination for MBBS andpost-graduate medical courses in the country.

The submission in this regard was made by SolicitorGeneral Gopal Subramanium before a Bench comprsing Justices RV Raveendran and A K Patnaik which granted him time to informit about the outcome of deliberations.

"The Centre is examining the entire issue and tryingto resolve it with state governments and the consultation isgoing on," he said adding things will sorted out.

The Centre came out with the notification in Decemberlast for holding the combined entrance test for MBBS and PGcourses.

The apex court had on December 13 had allowed the MedicalCouncil of India to go ahead with the singleeligibility-cum-entrance examination for MBBS and PG courses.

"We make it clear that the pendency of the applicationshall not come in the way of MCI notifying any regulationsframed by it, in accordance with law, nor come in the way ofanyone challenging the validity of such regulations, if andwhen brought into effect in accordance with law," the benchhad said.

Though the court, in an interim order, had allowed theMCI to go ahead with the CET, it had decided to hear thevarious stakeholders as state governments, private medicalcolleges and those run by the minorities may have someobjections.

The Bench during the earlier hearing had said thereare certain minority institutions like Christian MedicalCollege which conducts its entrance by itself.

The bench had favoured a cautious approach to theissue saying the students are a "volatile" community.
