Madurai branch of SPCA started

Madurai, Feb 15 (PTI): The Madurai branch of Society forPrevention of Cruelty to Animals was started today and wouldfunction as per guidelines of the Environment ministry,forestdepartment and Animal welfare board, District Collector CKamaraj said here today.

Presiding over a meeting organised for the purpose, he saidSPCA would create awareness about how animals are protected,and acts that prevented crimes and cruelty to animals.

Initially, SPCA would start functioning with two Assitantinspectors, he said.

Kamraj said acts like taking a large number of cattle in asmall open vehicle, carrying them in unsafe ways, killinggoats and sheep without proper permission were liable tobeprosectued.

Organising cock fights or sheep/animal fights are banned, hesaid, adding overloading bullock carts was also a crime. PTISSN APR
