Milk strike enters seventh day

Erode, Feb 13 (PTI) The strike called by Tamil Nadu MilkProducers Welfare Association here demanding increasedprocuring price entered its seventh day today, withsupply-less milk cooperatives wearing a deserted look.

As against an average supply of 1.5 lakh litres of milk aday, the Primary Milk Producers Cooperative Society registeredno supply from the milk producers who are demanding a hike ofRs eight per litre for buffalo''s milk and Rs 5 per litre forcow''s milk.

In some places, the milk producers sold the milk toprivate dairies and some in Uzhavar Shandies. Some othersconverted the milk into buttermilk or curd and sold them.

The Erode District Milk producers Cooperative Union, whichnormally sends more than 60,000 litres of milk daily toChennai, has not been able to do the same for the past oneweek, due the strike. The supply of AAVIN milk sachets in thedistricts is fast running out and authorities said yesterdaythat they would last only for one or two days more.

Meanwhile the milk producers conducted demonstration atfive places in the district today in areas including Nambiyurand Gobichettipalayam.
