Mamata for rehab measures for displaced in projects

Kolkata, Feb 12 (PTI) Railway Minister Mamata Banerjeetoday advocated rehabilitation measures for persons to bedisplaced from areas earmarked for development projects.

"People displaced for taking up development schemesshould not suffer. Everybody should be equally happy. If I amhappy, those displaced should be similarly happy. Thedisplaced should be under proper safety cover," Banerjee saidat a programme here.

The railway ministry had already taken up ''SukhiGrihakon Scheme'' to build one-room houses for families livingalong tracks in different zones of the country, Banerjee said.

"The people living beside railway lines in shantiesface problems and their children are often in danger whilecrossing tracks," she said.

The project would be implemented in collaboration withlocal civic bodies in different states.

At the programme Trinamool Congress-run KolkataMunicipal Corporation handed over keys of one-room flats builtat Nonadanga for the evicted people of Gobindapur railwaycolony.

Around 2,100 slum dwellers were evicted from therailway colony some years back.

Banerjee was present at the formal taking overceremony of an auditorium by KMC named after Bengali matineeidol Uttam Kumar attended by a host of eminent theatre andfilm personalities including Director Goutam Ghosh andSatyajit Ray Film and Television Institute Chairman RanjitMallick.
