Security system installed at SSG hospital to prevent baby

Vadodara, Feb 12 (PTI) The security system of electronictagging of new-born babies at Sir Sayajirao General (SSG)Hospital here, installed to prevent baby thefts, becameoperational since Friday, hospital authorities said today.

This government-run hospital is the first amonggovernment and private maternity homes in Central Gujarat forinstalling this security system.

Talking to PTI, Gujarat Health minister Jaynarayan Vyassaid installation of this security system in the hospital (atRukmini Chainani maternity hall) was necessary after theft andexchange cases of children was reported from SSG and SmtJamnabai Hospital, couple of months ago.

For identifying babies, at the time of birth, all infantsare assigned a numbered umbilical cord clamp with matchingnumbered wristbands. The wristbands are placed on either thearm or the leg. Wristbands are worn until after an infant isdischarged. The mother may then remove the ID bands once shehas left the hospital with her infant.

Dr Deveshwar, Superintendent of SSG, Dean of the Facultyof Medicine Dr A Leuva, Resident Medical Officer Dr B C Pateland others were present on this occasion.
