Now, get first copy of birth and death certificates free

New Delhi, Feb 11 (PTI) Citizens of the nationalcapital will now be able to get the initial copy of birth anddeath certificates sought by them free of charge.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi, which had beencharging Rs 20 each from people for issue of birthcertificates and Rs 10 for death certificates, today launcheda facility for issuing the first copies of the computeriseddocuments free from Citizen Service Bureaux in the city.

Delhi Mayor Prithivi Raj Sawhney and other senior MCDleaders unveiled the scheme.

"Citizens will be allowed to collect one copy of therecord of events of birth and death free of cost within oneyear from the occurrence of the event. The event should beregistered with MCD by the institutions where it has takenplace or the citizens themselves," the Mayor said.

Leader of MCD House Subhash Arya said the corporationintends to encourage the weaker sections of society to procuresuch certificates by providing the first copy free.

Arya said that initially the scheme has been launchedfor within one year of the occurrence of the event. However,MCD is developing a software which will cover the previousyears also. "All left out cases of the previous years will beshortly covered under the new facility," he said.
