Divisional Commissioner justifies police firing on GJM men

Jalpaiguri (WB), Feb 11 (PTI) The police had to firein self-defence as they were left with no alternative afterbeing attacked by armed GJM supporters at Sipchu here onFebruary 8, Divisional Commissioner Amarendra Kumar Singh saidtoday.

Singh, who visited the spot where police fired on GJMactivists as they violated prohibitory orders, said the forceshad to fire out of compulsion in the face of sustained attackby the morcha volunteers, after exercising other options.

"So far our information is concerned, as they (morcha)indulged in violence our force had to fire in self-defence,"he told reporters.
