Organic farming in Bihar village finds a place on global map

Nalanda, Feb 8 (PTI) In a boost to organic farming inBihar, Sohdih village in Nalanda district has found a place onthe global map through the global positioning system (GPS) forsowing potato over an area of 160 acres by using naturalfertilizers only.

"The farmers are expected to reap a bumper harvest ofpotato that will fetch them handsome profit", districtmagistrate Sanjay Agrawal said.

"A private international company ''Escorts'' cameforward to record it through the GPS and post it on the globalmap for the entire world and the scientific community to seefor themselves as to how the villagers have taken to farmingby using organic materials", he said.

Escorts'' production development manager AbhishekKumar said that his company decided to put the entire processof potato farming on the global map to make it available foreveryone to see it for themselves.

"Now that the village has come on the global map, thefarmers can earn a handsome profit for their organic producesamid growing demand of natural food materials globally", hesaid.

Representatives of a number of companies will meetstate government officials on February 11 next where they arelikely to place order for sale or export of organic produces,Kumar said.

Meanwhile, Agrawal said that the farmers may produceonions through organic farming after reaping high yield frompotato crop having huge demand from across the country and theworld.

With Sohdih village in Nalanda district already placedon global map, the state government has decided to promoteorganic farming in at least one village of the remaining 36districts, Agriculture Production Commissioner A.K. Sinhahas said.

"There is an adequate quantum of animal dung, vermicompost, rotten crops and fodders for use under organicfarming, he said. PTI KDK
