Ripper Reddy''s mother to file clemency petition before Prez

Bangalore, Feb 7 (PTI) Mother of Umesh Reddy, also knownas "Jack, the Ripper" whose death sentence was upheld by theSupreme Court will be filing a clemency petition beforePresident Pratibha Patil tomorrow.

In her clemency petition, B Gowramma, a native ofHiriyur taluk in Chitradurga district submitted that Umesh wasconvicted based on circumstantial evidence and there was "nodirect incriminating evidence" against him. And therefore, heis a "victim of failure of justice which is guaranteed to anycitizen under the Constitution of India".

She will also submit that for any person to be convicted,the law of the land demands that charges against such a personshould be proved beyond all reasonable doubt.

"Unfortunately the court has failed to appreciate thisprinciple and worngly convicted Umesh Reddy to death penalty".

On February One, Supreme Court upheld the death pentaltyawarded to Umesh, for the gruesome rape and murder of a widowhere 12 years ago.
