Cong says BJP has misused MCD funds for education

New Delhi, Feb 7 (PTI) Congress today accused the rulingBJP in MCD of misusing funds meant for education by spendingit on buying furniture and laptops for other departments.

Farhad Suri, a senior Congress Councillor, said at ameeting of the MCD that several crores of rupees meant foreducation has been bungled.

"MCD has not spent money on building new school buildingsor connecting each school with internet, something that it hadpromised earlier," Suri said.

He alleged that MCD has been inflating its estimatedincome for the last few years. In 2008-2009, MCD had estimatedan income of Rs 4,981 crore when the actual income was just 63per cent of the target.

In 2009-2010, he claimed, they estimated an income ofRs 5,843 crore but managed to earn just 62 per cent of thetarget.

Suri had provided a list of eight cases of ''mismanagement''of funds, including an expense of Rs 14 lakh towards buildingstaff quarters in Seelampur and paying salaries to the staff.

"A big chunk of the fund was spent on things that haveno relation to education," he said at a meeting to discuss MCDbudget.
