Rs 37 lakh beautification of areas around Meenakshi temple

Madurai, Feb 6 (PTI): The City Corporation will undertakebeautification of areas surrounding Sri Meenakshi Amman templeat a cost of Rs 37 lakh, mayor G Thenmozhi said today.

Speaking to reporters here, she denied reports that theCorporation planned to build a toilet near the Freedom FighterVaidhya Natha Iyer''s statue and said some rumour mongers arespreading such reports with an ulterior motive.

The Corporation only planned an Information Centre near thestatue, where old photographs and drawings of the temple cityand its surrounding areas would be displayed, she said.

A touch Screen facility would give full history of thecity. Besides, the toilet near the Park would be cleaned andmodernised.

The Pudu Mandapam, famous for its stunning and magnificentsculptures would be beautified and well illuminated at a costof Rs 13.5 crore after the shops are shifted and the Centralmarket would be converted into a modern Vehicle parkingcomplex.Work of laying a cement road on 56 km stretch inMadurai city was in progress, she said.
