Murder accused sentenced to RI for life

Kochi, Feb 7 (PTI) A CBI special court today sentenced aman to rigrous imprisonment (RI) for life and a fine of Rs10,000 for the murder of an elderly couple in Palakkad onDecember five, 2006.

Special Court judge K P Jyothindranath also sentenced himto undergo RI for 20 years under sections 449 (house tresspassin order to commission an offence punishbale with death) and397 (attempt to cause death) which will run consecutively.

Only after the accused has undergone the sentence under thetwo sections, he will undergo senctence under 302 (murder) forwhich he has been sentenced to RI for life, the court said.

The accused also has to undergo 2 years RI under sect 201(causing disappearnce of evidence) which will runconcurrently.

The case relates to the murder of a retired army officalKumaranunni Nair (84) and his wife Anandavalli Amma (69) whowere murdered inside their house at Vallolil in Palakkaddistrict on the night by inflicting fatal injuries on theirbodies with sharp edged weapon and the dead bodies were burntusing kerosene and coconut oil to destroy evidence.

All possible clues were wiped out from the scene of thecrime by the accused which was treated with Phenol and PepsiEntrin compount to purge out the body smell of the accused.

The case was first investigated by Palakkad Town police andCB CID before being investigated by CBI.

The accused, K Babu, was arrested on May 12, 2009 and theweapon used to murder the accused and some gold ornaments wererecovered from him.

In case of default of paymet, the accused will have toundergo a further period of simple imprisonment for a year.
