''Sikh should be appointed Punjab and Sindh Bank chairman''
Fatehgarh Sahib, Feb 5 (PTI) Shiromani GurdwaraParbandhak Committee today demanded that a person belonging tothe Sikh community should be appointed the next Chairman ofPunjab and Sindh Bank.
Eminent Sikh scholar Bhai Vir Singh had set up theBank in 1908 and keeping in view of sentiments of thecommunity, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh should appoint a Sikhas Chairman, SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar said.
Inderjit Singh had served as the Chairman for a longperiod and several branches of the bank have been opened incountry and abroad, he said.
"When the bank was nationalised in 1980, the thenPrime Minister had assured that only a Sikh would be appointedas Chairman of the bank, but now there are reports that a non-Sikh is being appointed as Chairman," he claimed.
