Jagan criticises govt for not releasing funds for fee scheme

Hyderabad, Feb 5 (PTI) Former Congress MP Y S Jagan MohanReddy today met the family members of an engineering student,Varalakshmi, who allegedly committed suicide as she was unableto pay the tuition fees.

Jagan later alleged that state government had notreleased the funds for the scheme of reimbursement of tutionfees for backward classes students.

"Had the government released funds, this girl would nothave died. Her family members told me that had the governmentannounced that it would not be paying the fees, they would nothave enrolled her in the course," he told reporters.

But the allegation that Varalakshmi committed suicide wasstrongly denied by the government.

State Transport Minister B Satyanarayana cited the dyingdeclaration made by Varalakshmi stating that she died of burninjuries due to accidental fire in the kitchen.

In an apparent reference to Jagans charge, he saidthe government knew about its responsibility and did not needto be told about it by anyone.

Jagan is going to undertake a one-day fast demandingthat government release adequate funds for fee-reimbursementscheme.
