Meeting on inclusion of medical education in NCHER

New Delhi, Feb 4 (PTI) A second round of meeting aboutthe possibility of inclusion of medical education in theproposed National Commission for Higher Education and Research(NCHER) was chaired by the Prime Minister''s Office here today.

The meeting assumed significance in the light of thefact that the HRD and the Health Ministry are involved in atug of war over this issue.

A task force, set up by the HRD Ministry, hasrecommended bringing all higher education, including medicaleducation and legal education under the purview of anoverarching regulatory body -- NCHER.

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has beenopposing it tooth and nail saying that medical education wasclosely linked with health infrastructure and should comeunder the ambit of the proposed National Commission on HumanResource for Health (NCHRH).

Today''s meeting was also attended by officials from HRDand Health Ministries.

While the PMO is believed to be in favour of both theMinistries finding a common ground on the issue, several othersuggestions have also been floated includingcross-representation by both the Ministries in the proposedregulatory bodies.
