La Marts principal, 3 teachers get bail extension
Kolkata, Feb 4 (PTI) A city court today extended thebail of the principal and three teachers of La Martiniere forBoys school in connection with the death of 13-year-oldstudent Rouvanjit Rawla and will hear on framing of moreserious charges on February 17.
The four accused, including principal SunirmalChakravarthy, appeared in the city sessions court of chiefjudge Dipak Saha Ray for confirmation of the bail earliergranted by the chief metropolitan magistrate''s court.
The other teachers were the head of middle school, L GGanian, David Ryon and Partha Dutta.
Ray fixed February 17 as the next date of hearing forconsideration of framing of charges against the accusedteachers under IPC 305 (abetment to suicide).
Rouvanjit, a student of class eight of La Marts,hanged himself on February 12, 2010, after being caned by theprincipal and three other teachers.
After his father Ajay Rawla lodged a complaint withthe local police station accusing the principal and threeteachers of abetment to his son''s suicide, police made fourarrests on October four.
The police later booked them under sections 323, 324and 352 of the IPC and section of 23 of the Juvenile Justice(care and protection of childen) Act, 2000 which are bailablesections.
On November 12, the metropolitan magistrate chargedthe four accused with abetment to suicide and sent the case tothe city sessions court for trial.
On January 31, a city court upheld the order of themetropolitan judge to try them under more serious charges thanthose earlier framed by police.
