HC asks police to rescue children working in zari units
New Delhi, Feb 3 (PTI) The Delhi High Court todaydirected the police to rescue the children working in zariunits in Jamia Nagar area.
A division bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and JusticeSanjiv Khanna also directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police,South East, to personally look into the recovery of childrenfrom zari units in Jamia Nagar and file a status report on theissue.
The court also directed the area police to take actionagainst some local people who have allegedly been obstructingthe rescue operation conducted by an NGO in co-ordinationwith government departments to abolish child labour.
The court''s direction came on an application filed bySave Childhood Foundation, an NGO, through counsel H S Phoolkaalleging that a mob had attacked the rescue team soon afterabout 50 children were recovered from various units recently.
According to the counsel, the mob manhandled the rescueteam which somehow managed to escape from the spot. The mobkidnapped the recovered children.
To this allegation, the court directed the area policeto file an action taken report with details about the numberof children who were recovered by February 23, the next dateof hearing.
The bench is hearing a PIL after taking suo motucognizance of a media report that several children betweenthe age group of 8-14 have been engaged in bag and zari-makingunits in Jamia Nagar.
