KMC plans to employ 14,000 jobless in civic work
Kolkata, Feb 2 (PTI) Trinamool Congress-controlledKolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has decided to employ14,000 unemployed youths in various civic maintenance andrepair work under the Urban employment project.
''''These jobless youths will be engaged shortly in theupkeep of the parks, garbage cleaning, road repair, drainagemaintenance and monitoring quality food sale on roadsidestalls, besides assisting the civic staff'''', city Mayor SovanChatterjee said.
Speaking at an interactive session on ''Vision ofKolkata in 2020'', the Mayor said that plans were afoot tocreate more greenery with the help of NGOs, keeping the cityfree from flooding during monsoon period by modernising thepumping stations and several other projects.
The Mayor alleged that the Left front government wasnot cooperating with the civic body in implementing variousdevelopment projects.
''''There are many issues which can be sorted out throughnegotiations at official-level between the state governmentand the KMC, but those are not encouraged by thegovernment'''', he added.
Chatterjee said that even after the KMC gave itspermission, the state government had not been cooperating inthe laying of Metro railway''s Joka-BBD Bagh extension projectwith the state-run Calcutta Tramways Company (CTC) refusing toleave space.
