Governor summons Bengal Home secretary, DGP

Kolkata, Feb 2 (PTI) Governor M K Narayanan summonedstate Home Secretary G D Gautama and DGP Naparajit Mukherjeeto Raj Bhavan today and is understood to have discussed lawand order with reference to police charge on journalists inMidnapore town in which five reporters were injured.

The overall law and order situation, politicalviolence and Maoist activities besides injuries to scribesduring police raid on a guest house were subjects that wereunderstood to have been discussed at the meeting, which lastednearly an hour, sources said.

The Governor has condemned the assault and injuries tofive newsmen, including two of a TV news channel, duringpolice action last Monday.

"Journalists should not be beaten. They wereperforming their professional duties. The incident isunfortunate and should not recur," Narayanan had said on thesidelines of a function yesterday.
