Prisoner escapes, 3 cops suspended

Jammu, Feb 1 (PTI) A man detained under Public SafetyAct (PSA) today escaped while he was being taken to a hospitalfor medical checkup here, after which authorities suspendedthree policemen and registered criminal proceedings againstthem.

A police team led by an Assistant Sub Inspector tookRahul Gupta of Udhampur district to GMC Hospital in Jammu fromKotbalwal Central Jail for a routine checkup by a medicalBoard today, police sources said.

Gupta, however, gave a slip to the cops and ecaped fromthe hospital, they said adding an alert was sounded soon afterhis escape but till late tonight he remained untraced.

Gupta, who was sent to Jail under PSA last year, wasbrought to the hosptial along with other inmates for a medicalcheck-up and was in handcuffs when he escaped, they said.

Taking a serious view of the escape, authoritiessuspended 3 cops, including an ASI, on the charge ofdereliction of duty and registered cases of against forinitiating criminal proceedings, they said.

Two men Nisar Mehboob and Aftab Ali, who were arrestedin Rajouri town on January 30 on the charge of theft, hadescaped from Rajouri city Police post yesterday and 4policemen, including a head constable, were suspended inconnection with the incident.
