Cold conditions continue to grip Kashmir division

Srinagar, Feb 2 (PTI) Cold waves continued to gripKashmir division as the minimum temperatures across the regionstayed below freezing point with Leh town in Ladakh being thecoldest place recording a low of minus 12.4 degrees Celsius.

Gulmarg skiing resort in north Kashmir and Pahalgamresort in south Kashmir were the coldest places in the Valleyrecording an identical low of minus 6.0 degrees Celsius, anofficial of the MeT department said.

The two famous tourist destinations were warmer by 2.4degrees C as compared to yesterday.

Srinagar city, the summer capital of Jammu andKashmir, witnessed a drop of 0.6 degrees recording a minimumtemperature of minus 2.2 degrees Celsius.

Qazigund, the gateway town to Kashmir valley, recordeda minimum of minus 3.1 degrees Celsius, while the mercury inKupwara settled at a low of minus 1.3 degrees Celsius.

Although the Chillai Kalan -- the 40-day harsh part ofwinter in Kashmir -- has ended, there was no let off in thecold wave conditions in the Valley.

Meanwhile, Ladakh region also saw the mercury dippingby a degree last night. Leh town recorded minus 12.4degrees Celsius and Kargil town registered minus 11.8 degreesCelsius.
