Animal welfare groups oppose cow slaughter in Goa

Panaji, Feb 2 (PTI) Animal welfare groups here havethreatened to hold protest walks in Goa, if government did notstop illegal cow slaughtering in the state which has attainedgigantic proportions.

In a joint press conference addressed here yesterday,groups like Akhil Vishwa Jai Sri Ram Gau Sanvardhan Kendra andVishwa Hindu Parishad and Animal Rescue organisation said thegovernment should immediately stop illegal cow butchering.

The demand comes after the seizure of huge quantity ofbeef on Goa-Karnataka border on Monday.

Panaji Animal Welfare Society chief Angela Kazi said thegovernment should keep a watch on the check posts to ensurethat cows are not transported from Karnataka to Goa forbutchering.

She said the department of Animal Husbandry andVeterinary Services should pull up their sleeves and implementthe existing laws banning illegal cow slaughtering.

A right wing activist Hanumant Parab, attached to AkhilVishwa Jai Sri Ram Gau Sanvardhan Kendra, said the stategovernment should completely ban cow butchering as it isagainst Hindu religion.

He said the government is supporting illegal butcheringactivity in the state and they are getting political patronagefor it.
