Jail inmates thrash doctor

Amritsar, Jan 31 (PTI) Infuriated over the death of aninmate a few days ago allegedly due to lack of timely medicalaid, a group of prisoners today thrashed an official doctorinside the central jail here.

The incident occurred when Dr Suman Kumar, who was onleave for more than a week, went inside the jail despite theinmates and authorities warning him against doing so, prisonofficials said.

On January 22, jail inmate Amarjit Singh (32), whocomplained of uneasiness in his chest, died allegedly due tolack of timely care as Dr Kumar reached the jail after hisdeath, they said.

"Senior jail officials including Superintendent andDeputy Superintendent strictly told Kumar not to join dutyinside the jail as inmates were very angry upon him,"Inspector Vikram Sharma of Cantonment police station said.

Criminal cases against two jail inmates, Gurpreet Singhand Rohit Kumar, have been registered, he said.
