BJP delegation meets Guv
Lucknow, Jan 31 (PTI) The BJP today alleged the BSPgovernment in Uttar Pradesh was mulling enactment of alegislation providing for appointment of any person as Mayoror Chairman of urban local bodies without being an electedmember.
In a memorandum to the Governor B L Joshi, the partyasked him not to give his consent to any such proposal.
"A delegation of BJP Mayors and Chairmen led by statepresident Surya Pratap Shahi met the Governor and urged himnot to give his consent to any such amendment in the LocalBodies Act," a party spokesman said.
"The proposal is against the spirit of the 74thConstitutional amendment which clearly states the seats in theHouse will be filled by direct elections," the memorandumsaid.
