Dharamsala, Jan 29: Exposing of a hawala scam in a transit home of 17th Karmapa Ogyen Trinley Dorje near Dharamsala on Jan 27 raised controversies and a grievous question - Is Dalai Lama's successor a Chinese agent in India?

Himachal Pradesh police seized almost Rs 6.50 crore worth foreign currency belonging to at least 23 countries, including China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Indonesia, Denmark, Korea, Australia, Japan,Thailand, US, UK and Nepal.

Police suspected that the money was being used to spread Chinese influence in Himachal and other parts of the country.

Ogyen Trinley Dorje, the 17th karmapa, has been suspected to be a Chinese link helping Beijing control Buddhist monasteries in Ladakh in Jammu and Kashmir to Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh.

An investigating officer stated, "The huge recovery, including 11 lakh Chinese yuan, substantiates what we have always suspected. The Enforcement Directorate and Income Tax authorities have been asked to probe this."

However, government claimed that the Karmapa was one of the candidates likely to succeed the Dalai Lama, not his chosen successor.
