BSY govt gets clean chit in 2008 church attacks

BS Yeddyurappa
Bangalore, Jan 28: After a long time BS Yeddyurappa government in Karnataka received a good news. The panel, which investigated into the 2008 church attacks cases, gave clearance to the state government.

The panel, headed by retired Karnataka high court judge, BK Somashekara said, "There is no basis to the apprehension of petitioners that politicians, BJP, sangha parivar (as pro-Hindu outfits are called) and the state government are directly or indirectly involved in the attacks."

The main reasons for the attacks on churches were circulation of literature with "insulting attitude" against Hindus and attempts at conversion of Hindus to Christianity, stated the panel.

The commission was set up to initiate investigation over the attacks on churches in the coastal town of Mangalore and in Udupi, Chikamagalur, Kolar, Chikkaballapur, Bellary and Davangere districts in 2008.
