Krishna concerned over fate of Indian students enrolled at sham US University
New Delhi, Jan 27 (ANI): External Affairs S. M. Krishna on Thursday expressed concern over the fate of Indian students enrolled at an American university that was shut down on charges of visa fraud.
Krishna, who was attending a meeting with the Afghani journalists here, said his ministry has asked for a report on the issue from the Indian Consulate in the United States.
"Well, we have asked for a report from our mission, and from our Consul General. And when the report is received, we will be taking it up with the Government of United States. And in the meanwhile, we have instructed our mission in the consulate that the welfare of the students has to be looked into by our consulate," said Krishna.
Recently, a complaint was filed against Tri-Valley University in California, alleging that it helped foreign nationals illegally acquire immigration status.
Following this petition, the university was shut down.
Owing to this move, Indian students, coming mainly from southern Andhra Pradesh, face the possibility of being deported.
Krishna also expressed concern that the Indian students, who number between 1,200 to 1,400, had not approached the Indian consulate for aid and assistance.
"It is strange that the students have not approached our consulate as yet, you know. We hope that the things can be worked out," he added.
Investigation authorities in the United States found that the sham university was charging millions of rupees from students for getting them visas and student work permits in the country. (ANI)
