Maha CM orders inquiry into Collector''s murder

Mumbai, Jan 25 (PTI) Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavanordered an inquiry into the gruesome murder of MalegaonAdditional District Collector Yashwant Sonawane allegedly bypetrol and diesel mafia today and said strict action will betaken against the culprits.

"The government would not tolerate attacks on theofficials and strict action would be taken against thoseresponsible for burning Sonawane. I have ordered an inquiry inthe matter," Chavan said.

The Chief Minister also condoled the family of thevictim, who was burnt alive at a roadside Dhaba near Manmadtown, about 260km from Mumbai.

Additional Chief Secretary of Home DepartmentUmeshchandra Sarangi said, "Sonawane was without security andwas accompanied by his personal secretary only. After theincident, everyone fled from the spot."

The district Inspector General and Superintendent ofPolice reached the spot immediately and are inquiring thematter, the official said.

Sonawane, a 1994 batch officer, started his career asa Deputy Collector and was promoted to the office over a year.
