Three injured critically in police firing, cop suspended

Rangiya (Assam), Jan 24 (PTI) Three persons werecritically injured today and a cop suspended as police firedat a mob, which turned violent after a youth was knocked downby a speeding vehicle in Assam''s Kamrup (rural) district.

Udhab Medhi, 22, was knocked down by a speedingvehicle killing him on the spot early this morning atDhuparguri area, District Superintendent of Police P S Mahantatold PTI.

Angry residents of the area set ablaze the vehicle andblocked the road demanding immediate arrest of the driver whomanaged to escape, he said.

The mob burnt tyres and pelted stones following whichthe police resorted to lathicharge to disperse them.

As the mob turned more violent, the police opened firein which three persons were critically injured and severalothers received minor injuries, Mahanta said.

Kuldip Singh, the Officer-in-Charge of Hajo policestation, was suspended with immediate effect following theincident.

The situation has now been brought under control, theDSP said.
