Textile industry workers call off strike in Surat
Surat, Jan 21 (ANI): The weeklong strike by a group of textile industry workers ended in Surat on Thursday.
The textile workers have been demanding higher wages for some time now and recently they called for a shutdown of all powerloom units in the city.
Workers called off the shutdown after a meeting with mill owners.
"Today's decision was that wages will be increased and if it is not done then the workers will look for other options of livelihood," said Shatrughan Gowda, a textile worker.
Meanwhile C.R Patil, a legislator from Navsari said: "Almost all demands of the workers have been accepted and I feel that they have left satisfied and I am hoping that from tomorrow looms in the local areas will begin functioning."
Things had turned ugly earlier in the day when a group of agitating workers attacked a local police station in the city after their colleagues were detained by policemen.
Demonstrators pelted stones and damaged police property but were later dispersed after baton charging.
Police personnel have been deployed at all loom factories in the city so that the protesting textile workers do not vandalise the textile industry.
Surat is the hub of textile units and diamond cutting industry. (ANI)
