TWC miffed over no police action against torturers of woman
Agartala, Jan 19 (PTI) Tripura Women''s Commission(TWC) today expressed concern over alleged police inaction inarresting those involved in the alleged torture of a woman ina village near Indo-Bangla border in West Tripura district.
A team of the commission visited Manikyanagar villagebordering Bangladesh yesterday and found that despite specificcomplaint to the Sonamura police station, a woman was torturedby miscreants on January 14 last with no action taken, TWCChairperson Tapati Chakraborty said.
She alleged the rowdies broke into the house of oneAkkas Ali at midnight and forcibly dragged his sister, who isa mother of two children, to a nearby spot and tortured herblaming she was having a relation with a Bangladeshi.
Akkas was also beaten up when he tried to resist.
Rahima�s husband is in jail in Bangladesh and she hasbeen living with her brother, with two of her children.
In the case of any specific complaint against anywoman, only legal action can be taken, Chakraborty saidpointing out there cannot be any room for torture.
Director General of Police K Saleem Ali said of thetotal incidents of crime in state, the crime against womenaccounted for 37 per cent.
The Tripura police have launched �Prayaas�, aninitiative to�root out crime against women, with the help ofpublic.
