Police-textile workers clash in Gujarat leave over 15 injured

Surat (Guj), Jan 20 (PTI) Over a dozen persons wereinjured here today following clashes between police andstriking textile workers after they allegedly ransacked anoutpost in Ved road area of the city, police said.

More than 15 persons including two policemen were injuredin the clashes after a mob of striking textile labourersattacked the Pandol police outpost on Ved road and peltedstones at guards, who were deployed in the area since thelabourers'' agitation began a few days ago, they said.

Also, a bus, a police van, an auto rickshaw and fourtwo-wheelers were badly damaged by the unruly mob followingwhich police lobbed four tear gas shells and cane-chargedtroublemakers to control the situation.

All the injured have been shifted to the civil hospitalfor treatment, police said, adding that over 100 people havebeen detained in this connection.

They said the situation is under control now, and heavypolice deployment has been made in the area to curtailviolence.

Textile workers of various units of Surat are onstrike for the last two days, demanding wage revision.
