Couple killed in freak road mishap; 2 kids escape

Madurai, Jan 19 (PTI) A couple were killed and their twochildren escaped with minor injuries when a private bus rammedinto their car as they were struggling to come out of it afterthe vehicle capsized on crashing into the highway median atnearby Tirumangalam.

The car dashed against the median and was tossed beforeturning turtle as Balasubramanian (40), a textile merchant,lost control of the vehicle, police said.

Even as the occupants were trying to come out of the carwhich got mangled under the impact of the mishap, a speedingBangalore bound bus hit and dragged the car several feet.

Balasubramanian was crushed to death on the spot whilewife Parimala died at a hospital without responding totreatment.

Their two daughters -- Jayasri (3) and Naveena (5) --escaped with injuries and had been hospitalised.

The family was returning here after attending Pongalfestival at Nochipatti near Vedasanthur in Coimbatoredistrict when the mishap occurred.
