Apple faces flak from green campaigners in China

Beijing, Jan 20: Apple is facing flak from an unlikely quarter this time around. After riding a high-wave of success with a whopping 78 per cent jump in net income at USD 6 billion for the Oct-Dec period of 2010, Apple is at the receiving end of criticism now.

Around three dozen Chinese environmental groups is up in arms against Apple Inc accusing it of not responding to concerns about pollution and health problems at factories that supply it with components.

The fact was released in a report released on Thursday, Jan 20. The report ranks Apple at the bottom of more than two dozen tech companies in its responsiveness. The criticism comes as the company begins to open stores in China and push further into the Chinese market.

Apple is taking a beating after it failed in taking care of the safety concerns of workers employed with Foxconn Technology Group. Foxconn makes iPhones and other gadgets for Apple.

Many workers in Foxconn killed themselves in southern China last year. Dozens of workers in Wintek Corp. were rendered sick as an after-effect of the deadly chemicals used in making touch screens for Apple and other companies.

An Apple spokeswoman failed to respond on a request to comment on the said issue.
