Nainital, Jan 19 (ANI): As the temperature dipped across the country, animals in the Pandit Govind Ballabh Pant Zoo in Nainital are being given proteins and mineral in their diet by authorities to combat the cold.

The high-altitude zoo, situated at a height of 2,075 metres, provides shelter to rare species like black bears, snow leopards, and Siberian tigers.

Prakash Joshi, Deputy Range Officer of the zoo, said the animals needed food supplements to increase their bodies' resistance.

"Although all species can survive at high altitude but right now it is severely cold. Sometimes temperature goes down to zero degrees. So keeping this in mind, we have placed curtains in front of cages of pheasants. We regularly give them agro-feed like green vegetables, onions, garlic with supplement food, like eggs and vitamins," he added.

The zoo authorities have also deployed staff on night duty to look after the animals and for taking more care them. (ANI)
