RSP turns Jagdishpur into model village

Rourkela, Jan 18 (PTI) Life style of 131 families ofJagdishpur, a sleepy village under Kuanrmunda Block, about 28km from here has changed with provision of income generationschemes and total infrastructural development.

The villagers will no more have to walk for miles tofetch water or venture in the open for toilet.

The tribal village has been adopted by Rourkela SteelPlant (RSP) under +model Steel Village+ sceheme three yearsback which completed the task by making all round developmentand providing income generation schemes for the villagers.

RSP sources said it had taken up activities related toinfrastructural development, improvement in health, educationand increasing ncome generation activities.

The plant has constructed 1.6 km of road with threeculverts in the village. Electricity, a basic necessity toenhance the quality of life was provided by bearing the totalcost of installation, the sources said.

Besides, a total sanitation and water supply projectwas implemented as a result each family having toiletfacilities and 24 hours tap water supply. Overhead tank withfacilities of three water taps points in a house were providedfree of cost. (more) PTI SCP

Twenty families have been included in the wadi project, an initiative that helps small farmers inagriculture, horticulture and forestry products in small landholdings.

A total of 54 families have been given improvedvariety of chicks while two families have been provided withimproved variety of goats, as to add to their family income, asenior official of the RSP told PTI.

All the families were practicing improved agricultureunder the RSP experts. A women research centre set up by theplant has been functioning in the village, where young firlsof the village were learning the nuances of various incomegeneration activities as well as health, hygiene and otherself development activities.

A Self Help Group too has been operating under thepatronage of the steel plant. +Lok Vikas Sangathan+, anorganisation has been formed with opinion leaders of thevillage as its members. The Sangathan has been functioning asa facilitator for the proper implementation of all thedevelopmental projects.

The involvement of the villagers in every stage rightfrom the identification of beneficiaries to completeimplementation of the project, has made the initiatives of RSPsuccessful in this tiny village, that is now taking rapidstrides on the path of progress, J C Mohapatra, head ofthe corporate communication of the RSP, said.
