One more arrested in Divya assault case

Lucknow, Jan 17 (PTI) One more person was today arrestedby CB-CID in connection with the sexual assault and death of a12-year-old girl student in Kanpur, a senior police officialsaid here.

"Santosh Kumar Singh alias Mishraji was arrested by theCB-CID from Lucknow in connection with Divya sexual assaultand death case of Kanpur," Special Director General of Police(law and order) Brij Lal told reporters.

He said Mishra was accountant at Gyan Bharati Schoolwhere Divya was sexually assaulted allegedly by the manager''syounger son on September 27 last.

"Mishra has been charged under sections 304 (culpablehomicide), 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence),202 (intentional omission to give information of offence byperson bound to inform) and 419 (punishment for cheating bypersonation) of the IPC," the official said.

The Uttar Pradesh government has already suspended threepolice officers besides ordering inquiry against the then DIGof Kanpur Prem Prakash in connection with the case.

The state government has also informed Medical Councilof India about the conduct of a private doctor Abha Mishra,who had medically examined the victim.

The incident occurred on September 27 when Anushka aliasDivya, a fourth standard student of Gyan Bharati, was sexuallyassaulted within the school premises.

The girl was sent back home along with two maids and hermother was informed at her workplace. Divya died in hospitalthat evening. The CB-CID probe was ordered on October 23.

"The CB-CID in its report has found school manager C PVarma, his two sons Mukesh and Piyush guilty and shortcomingsin the police action," state Cabinet Secretary ShashnakShekhar Singh had earlier told reporters.

The accused trio has been put behind bars. A DNAexamination during the probe suggested the involvement ofPiyush, the prime accused, in the assault, and a charge sheetwas filed against him in a special CJM court last week. PTIABN AVA PG
