Four crushed to death as truck turns turtle over them

Phagwara, Jan 16 (PTI) Four persons were crushed to deathwhile another one was seriously injured after a truck turnedturtle over them on NH 1 at Chahal Nagar crossing here today,police said.

The deceased were identified as Surinder Kaur, in herfifties, and her daughter Parminder Kaur, in her twenties, ofChahal Nagar, Pritam Singh (72) and his wife Jasbir Kaur (65)of Baba Deep Singh Nagar, Jalandhar.

While the mother-daughter duo was coming on a rickshawfrom the local bus stand to their house, the couple waswaiting for a bus for Jalandhar.

The rickshaw puller, Sham Bahadur, was seriously injuredand admitted in a hospital here.

The truck, loaded with vegetables, was coming from NewDelhi to Amritsar.

The mishap occurred when another truck ahead had appliedbrakes abruptly after which the first truck lost control andoverturned, crushing to death the mother-daughter duo and thecouple.

The drivers of both trucks have been arrested and a caseregistered against them, the police said.
