Final Decision: Adarsh housing to be demolished

Mumbai, Jan 16: The environment ministry finally delivered its ultimate judgment that Mumbai's tainted Adarsh housing society has violated green norms and the housing structure should be demolished soon. The ministry also asked the society authority to restore the site to its original position.

Earlier Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh on Nov 12, 2010 claimed that the Adarsh did not have any permission to build the structure in Mumbai's Colaba area and the building may be demolished soon.

The ministry send one showcause to the society asking the reasons that why Adarsh should not be demolished.

On Sunday, Jan 16, Jairam stated, "Adarsh society has violated the very spirit of CRZ (Coastal Regulation Zone) Notification, 1991 by not even acknowleding the need for clearance under this notification... Ignorance of law an never be an excuse for non-compliance."

The Adarsh building was originally meant to be a six-storey structure of house for the Kargil war heroes and widows, but was converted into a 31-storey building.
